Gender Bias?

WT #1 pg. 783

Women in today’s society have just as many rights as men do. The attitudes towards women have changed so much since Woolf’s argument was introduced. No one really cares if someone is a man or a woman when it comes to jobs and careers. The only situation I see where women can’t do certain things if they want to, is in the military. Women in the military have less rights and opportunities than men do, this is more prevalent in a war zone. Women are excluded from ground combat and other areas in the military; I believe this occurs for a good reason. Other than this I don’t see or know of any instances where women are not able to do something they want. Woolf’s arguments have almost completely lost its relevance; we would have had a women president if Barack Obama didn’t run for office at the same time. Hilary Clinton would have definitely won because the easily influenced Americans would have voted for the woman candidate. We might have another opportunity to elect a woman president in 2012 or 2016, if Sarah Palin runs for office. I believe she will have a great chance of being elected. It all depends how well our current president does in his first four years. If something drastically happens in Obama’s first term, before the next election, expect Palin to run and most likely win the presidential seat.

If a woman is qualified for a position than she will get the job, it’s not like the movies make it out to be. The movies I’m talking about is of a qualified woman who doesn’t get the job and the position gets filled by a less qualified man. These ideas are outdated and are exaggerated for the movies. If everyone stops believing, doing, and being influenced by what they see on tv, magazines, and movies the world would be a better place. Also I believe when women or men complain about not getting the job, they blame it on anything they could think of except themselves, including gender bias. When in reality the reason why they didn’t get the job is because they weren’t the best qualified or they tanked on their interview. These type of people need to take responsibility for themselves and by doing this they can start working on fixing themselves for they can get the job next time. All in all, the arguments of Woolf have lost their relevance. It’s a different world than it was even 10 years ago, there are equal or even more opportunities for women now. There are even rules and regulations people have to follow to hire an equal number of men to women, and also hire a diverse group of people. Whatever the case, there will always be instances where there is bias going on, everyone is different. But the main attitude in our culture is men and women are equal.

  1. I want to start off by saying that I respect your argument, however I completely disagree with what you had to say. Yes, we have come along way from the 1950’s, however men and women are still not seen as equals. When it comes to employment if a man and a woman were to apply for the same job, have the exact same qualifications, and both do great on the interview, who would be hired? The man. Why? Because he has a penis between his legs. It is not as easy as you seem to think for a woman in the work place. It is not only harder for us to get a job that would normally be deemed as “a man’s job,” but we have to work twice as hard to prove ourselves since we are the “weaker sex.” I do think that America is evolving and beginning to open their eyes to the idea that men and women are equal, but we are by no means completely there yet. I know that a lot of men still look to women as the 1950’s housewives that should stay home cooking and cleaning as that is the “women’s role.” I will continue to fight my way to the top and I will make sure that no one is able to view me as less than. I hope that you consider my side of the argument as I considered yours.

  2. I also disagree with what you are saying here. I thing that our attitudes towards men and women are far from them being equal, especially in the work place. I think in most cases if a man and a woman with the same qualifications apply for a corporate position that the man is likely to be the one who is hired. Even if the woman was to get the job she probably wouldn’t be given as much respect as the man would. Men are seen as more powerful in the business would. If a man is hard on goal driven and makes his employees work hard he is “assertive and powerful”, if a woman acts the same way she is “an overbearing bitch”. Also, most men have a hard time working for a woman, they often undermine them just because they are female. It’s not to say that the attitudes of women in the workplace haven’t improved a great deal over the years but they are far from being equal. You used Hilary Clinton as an example, but notice that the biggest issue about her running was that she was female, and not about anything she stood for, if women were considered so equal it wouldn’t have been the main focus. Also there was a lot of criticism about her being such a “strong” woman, as if strength is a quality that women shouldn’t possess. I think it’s great that you believe that woman are equal to men because it shows that you probably apply that thought to your life, but I don’t thing the rest of the world is quite there with you yet!

  3. I do not personally agree with what you are saying. I think that there are still a high number of disadvantages for women than men. There are still a lot of instances where men get chosen over women and though women have come a long way, we still have a long way to go. Though it is true that we could have had a woman president and women are holding higher and higher places in society there are still gender biased problems, just like there are still problems with race, religion, sexual orientation, et cetera.
As for women in the military, I do agree with you that there is a lot of gender biased there. There are still a lot of things that women are restricted from doing in the military and women have a lot of sexual harassment issues in the military as well. I think that it will take a long time for women to be looked upon as equal to men. Acknowledgment in our society of women and the places that they hold and the actions that they chose to take often get a lot of criticism and though men that hold high places get criticism as well, there are a lot of things that it is looked at as okay for man to do that if a woman did she would be scorned upon. Hopefully one day the scale will be equal for men and for women but that day is not today and will not be tomorrow.

  4. I agree, yet I disagree with what you said. Women have came a long way from the 1950's yet, there are still many areas in today's world that are seen fit for only men. For example there are construction jobs, many women are not allowed to work the machinary, I know there have been women to do it, but it was not an easy task to get to that point, it took years. Women even today are seen as "eye candy". The women who do get hired into jobs which it may have been hard for them to get there are most likely beautiful women, not that I assume things, they have done surveys on such things, and found that more attractive women get the jobs they want easier than the less attractive women. I think disscrimination will never end, no matter how hard they try, there will always be some man out there who beleives his gender is superior than ours. I am by no means a femanist, I just beleive that you may not see things the way they are because you are a man. Not that you feel superior to women, but you may not notice things as much because they do not involve your gender. I am going to school to be a surgeon, and I cannot tell you how many times I get people who tell me that it is hard for women to get into that field, but times are changing and I agree with you there, it has become easier for women to get such jobs, but it doesn't mean it is garunteed.

  6. With your blog I respect what you said but I agree and disagree. There are some things that need to be taking into good look. I have seen men get better jobs then women even though they have the same education in the field. Some people do not like those women are on top. Some think that women cannot run a whole country because they think men will always and forever known for running any kind of job. Yes, jobs have improved so much for women since how it was before but it has not got better like many women want. Many men still believe that women are meant for the job of stay at home with the kid’s job. Women who get well paid jobs always end up being the back end of the bus. They get treated like she does not know anything about the job. I think that women can do military combat. I got 3 friends which are girls that are in the army, they survived it all. They always tell me that many guys make fun of them because they are not supposed to be in the army. The guys tell them they belong in the house with kids. Women in the military services are looked at as if they cannot do anything and I think that is not true. For myself, I would not be able to do that but women can do what men do. What I do agree with is that you see that women can do things men can do. That I do agree with and how you put Hilary Clinton and Sarah Palin.
